The influence of the Sierra de Toloño on the vineyard
The influence of the mountains determines the appearance of the landscape and the climate of a region. In Leza, sheltered by the Sierra de Toloño, grows the old vineyard of Aiurri, our winegrowing project in Rioja Alavesa.
Throughout history this mountain range has witnessed the unique environment that has been forged under its influence. Small plots of vineyards with different orientations, altitudes and soil structures make up one of the reference winegrowing areas in our country.
The mountainous orography of the environment has generated, over time, an impact on the orientation and position of the land for cultivation. Thus, the slopes that have been formed for viticultural work offer different degrees of exposure to sunlight and rays, which favors a gradual ripening of the grapes and optimal photosynthesis.
The layout of the vineyards on terraces and steep slopes allows for natural drainage and greater contact with the wind flow, reducing the risk of vine diseases and benefiting the quality of the harvest.
The Sierra de Toloño as a barrier
At the same time, the Sierra de Toloño acts as a natural barrier to protect the Leza vineyard area from adverse climatic conditions. Its orography contributes to the creation of a unique microclimate in which Atlantic and Mediterranean influences are combined.. This mountain range contributes to create a unique microclimate in which Atlantic and Mediterranean influences combine. The mountains block the cold and humid winds from the north, creating a warmer and drier environment, ideal for vine cultivation.
Its altitude also favors the existence of significant thermal amplitudes between day and night, which is beneficial for the development of the aromas and flavors of the grapes.
The importance of the Sierra de Toloño in the Leza vineyard is essential. This mountain range provides a favorable microclimate, a diversity of soils and a unique relief, factors that contribute to the quality and uniqueness of the wines we produce in a renowned wine region in our country.
